List of common questions about the island and the verse.

How does the play work?
It’s simple. Any pup can post new threads any time they desire. They can occur anywhere on the island involving any number of activities. Posts can be open or closed, and you must indicate this in the thread subject and tag it with open or closed.

Open posts are open to any other pup to tag your pup and start an RP with them. Multiple pups can tag into the posts and essentially multiple conversations can stem from the base starting thread.

Closed posts are usually locked between two or more pups and private to them only. Please indicate what pup you are locking the post to in the subject header.

Singular posts can also be made which are posts involving only your pup that you do not wish to be tagged on. These are often used for plot or character development within RPGs. Indicate this in the header so other pups know not to tag you.

Remember, when you join a thread, add your character tag when you join for ease of us keeping track of your activity. If you do not remember to tag, we might not know you have posted and could risk being removed from the game. Every character in a thread must be added in the thread tags.

Do we really have to tag everything? It seems so tedious.
Tags are vital for mods to keep track of player activity. Every time your character starts/joins a thread, you must list their character tag on the post. You also must add a tag to indicate if the post is open or closed, and the location tag. You can find a list of all tags HERE and you can track each character by clicking on their name on the TAKEN CHARACTERS LIST. (Information on how to tag entries can be found at the LJ info page HERE)

Can my pup arrive on Être Libre at any point in their canon?
Yes. They can also arrive pre-canon or post-canon, or with a background that deviates from canon. For example, the Harry Potter books have come to completion with Harry being 17 years old, however an adult version of Harry might arrive with a background that does not include Book 7 canon. Or Rogue from the X-Men might arrive without having taken the cure as movie verse canon indicates she did. It is completely up to the writer. All we ask is that the canon point the pup arrives and/or the canon point their background deviates is clearly stated on the pup’s profile page.

Arrival posts can be boring and no ever tags me. Do I have to have my pup "arrive" or can they already be established on the island when I join as a player?
In the APPLICATION, you will see that we request an in-character writing sample. This serves as your first post in the game when you join. We have two options for players to enter a character to [profile] etrelibre_rpg:

1) As a new arrival, explained on the game's profile page. Your character is in their old life and suddenly appears on the island. Established characters will tag your character and explain (or try to, bearing in mind you may get an eccentric character who offers an interesting take on the island) how the island works and why you're here. These are a good way to get your pup in the game to start from scratch.

2) However, arrivals aren't everyone's cup of tea and can, indeed, get tedious if you have played in a lot of pan-fandom games in the past. This is why we now have a second game entry option. You may apply for a character who is already an island inhabitant, with it being your choice how long they have been living there. If you join this way, it is assumed your character knows the operations of the island and already had a job. You will need to notify mods upon joining what job you wish your character to have. The only catch is that your entry post must include reference to how long your character has been on the island, and reference to some details of their previous life so other players can get a feel for the character. This might be by then thinking about home, for example. If you choose this option, your entry post will be open for other players to tag your character and begin a conversation.

I can apply for ANY character from ANY fandom?
There are exceptions. We accept canon characters only. No original characters, or animated characters; the exception for cartoon or comic characters is that they must have a human PB. We also do not accept applications for characters written by authors who have specifically requested their characters are not recreated in a fandom enviroment. Applications for these characters will be automatically rejected. These authors are:

Archie Comics
P.N. Elrod
Raymond Feist
Terry Goodkind
Laurell K. Hamilton
Robin Hobb
Megan Lindholm (Robin Hobb)
Dennis L. McKiernan
Robin McKinley
Irene Radford
Anne Rice
Anne Rampling (Anne Rice)
A.N. Roquelaure (Anne Rice)
Nora Roberts
J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts)

So, I know NC-17 posts need to be taken to character journals, but what about ships? Are crossover ships okay? What about slash or femmeslash?
Anything goes. We most certainly welcome and encourage crossover ships as that really is the foundation of panfandom roleplaying. Het, slash, and femmeslash are also more than welcome. It is not out intention to restrict player’s shipping preferences in any way.

What is [profile] etre_intouch and how does it work?
In [profile] etre_intouch, characters can send text messages, letters, emails or notes to each other. They can also participate in 'online chats' here, similar to conversations people would have on IMs. Communications here will generally be in first person and WILL NOT CONTRIBUTE TO MONTHLY ACTIVITY. This is just an additional area characters can interact in different forms. You must still participate in third person RP on the main board, [profile] etrelibre_rpg to remain active. If a character has to reply to emails/notes/letters/texts, please have them to do as a rely to the original thread and not as a brand new post. Please address the character you are directing the correspondence to in the subect line. Like the main comm, all posts must be tagged with your character tag, and a tag indicating what form of communication it is (ie. [what] text message, [what] email, [what] note, [what] letter, [what] online chat).

My character will find five items from home upon arrival to the island. Can this be ANYTHING, because I really want him to have his New York penthouse apartment?
The items that can be found can be anything that is not fixed down. Houses, apartments etc. can not be found because they are fixed and all islanders must live on the resort. However, things like furniture, cars, pets, etc. can be found, as we are aware such items can often be vital to a canon character's foundation (eg, House's whiteboard, Dean Winchesters Implala). Your character's five items must be listed on your character's user info page along with the canon point of entry, as requested in the application.

My pup is a lazy bugger. Does he/she really have to work?
No, but pups must find themselves some sort of source of income. Jobs and employment is the best and quickest way to do this, however you might prefer to look for someone willing to keep your pup in their lifestyle, you may have a not-so-innocent pup willing to become a prostitute, you may have a musical pup who likes to busk. We’re open to anything, but we do ask that you check with the mods if you are uncertain about your choice of earning a living.

I have an idea for a business I want my pup to run. Can it be anything? How does a pup fund the opening of a business if they have no money?
Contact the mods to discuss your idea and business concept. If a pup wants to open and run a viable business on the island, they will automatically have the means to do so as the eventual purpose is to be a source of income for the pup.

On the issue of income, does my pup need to pay for food and accommodation?
Food and life essentials and desires, yes. Accommodation, no. When they are arrive, they need to check into the resort and from there on that is where they live. They can choose single, double, triple or quad accommodation in the main complex or a beach bungalow which are usually intended for two or more people (ie, couples, friends, families etc.)

If they check in when they arrive but decide they want to move rooms, move in with someone, or switch to a bungalow/room, can they do that?
Yes, just leave a message on the guest book post to indicate what you would like.

My pup hates being trapped on the island and wants to try and leave. What happens?
Nothing. The premise of the game indicates the pup cannot leave until he or she is ready. They can try to discover how to leave but unless they are ready, they will not find it. There is no choice but to become accustomed to being on the island and how or when the pup does this is up to the individual player to plot out.

What happens if I/my pup wants to leave the game?
Contact the mods to indicate your intention to leave the game. We prefer you to post a leaving post for your pup so other players are aware of their departure and of the character vacancy, however we understand in some circumstances it may be necessary to leave without notice. In this case, please let us know so we can remove you and your pup from our lists and make the vacancy known in case anyone else wants to take the character.

But what if I want to come back?
If you want to return with the same pup, the concept of the game indicates they will return with no recollection of having been there in the past. They will need to write another entry post from a different canon point beyond where they entered the first time. The islanders will know of them but they will not know the islanders and it will be just like they are arriving for the first time. Islanders are prohibited from indicating to the returning pup that they know them from the previous time. However, you can only return if your character is free and not reserved and you will not have to submit another application. Just contact the mods if you wish to return your pup to the game

My character is dead. What do I do?
Bring them to the island! Just means they can't leave again.

Hiatus? Yes? No?
Yes. Contact us to indicate how long you need. If the absence will only be a couple of weeks, usually no action other than notifying the mods and players you are involved in plots with will be required. However, if you think its going to be more than six weeks (and hence the time period we require for activity to stay active), we will ask that you notify other players in [profile] etrelibre_ooc that your pup will be inactive and for how long. We generally will not grant hiatus for longer than three months unless in extreme circumstances, however contact us to discuss the situation.

I have an idea for a plot with another pup. Can I contact anyone about possible plot ideas?
Absolutely. We encourage as much player-to-player communication as possible if interacting regularly with other pups. Please contact other players by Livejournal's private message function, or if they player does not have that enable, via [profile] etrelibre_ooc.

How often do we have to post to stay active?
Once every four weeks for each pup you have active. If you do not post or tag into a thread at least once every four weeks, notification will be made via [profile] etrelibre_ooc of your pup’s potential removal from the game.

I have encountered a problem with another player. What should I do?
Firstly, keep the issue between the players only. We do not tolerate OOC disputes being brought into game play between pups. In the first instance, try to resolve the issue privately with the other player. More often than not, simple discussion about the misunderstanding can resolve the issue. If this seems impossible, contact a mod and we will analyse the situation on a case by case basis.
